Choosing the right college

School's over and you're looking forward to chucking the uniform in favour of your cool, new college life. But, before you submerge yourself in all that college life entails, it's important to consider exactly where you will be spend some of your most formative years. It's that phase of your life when you discover yourself, you dreams and prepare yourself for the big, bad world.

Time spent in college is memorable and you should prepare for it by choosing the right college. Career counsellor Rohan Sehgal says you'll always be identified with the place that you studied at and points out certain factors to keep in mind when closing on a college.

Reputation

A well-respected college will ensure better career prospects. According to Sehgal, some employers don't even bother to read your CV in detail, if you come from a reputed college. Studying at a big league college gives you an added edge.

Co-curricular activities

These ensure your all-round development as an individual. Moreover, they allow you to hone in skills (other than education) required in the real world. Look for a college that organises co-curricular activities such as festivals, competitions and sports. This gives you wider exposure as compared to students closeted in classrooms all the time.

Placements

Most colleges today tie up with companies for placements, as organisations want to recruit fresh talent. Ensure that your college provides placement opportunities. According to Sehgal, employers snap up students from colleges. "The remaining numbers are filled up through other applications. You stand a better chance of landing better employment if you have placement opportunities in your college," he explains.

Facilities

Certain facilities at college can go a long way in enhancing your educational experience. These include multimedia rooms, libraries, cafeterias and infrastructure such as Internet access.

While choosing a college, ensure the place you apply to provides at least the basic facilities. After all, you are going to spend some of your most constructive years there.
